How to cope if you�re scared of flying

Being scared of flying is really nothing to be ashamed of. As the saying goes, if we had been meant to fly we'd have grown wings, but thanks to man's ingenuity we are able to traverse great distances in the shortest possible time. You may have noticed that when you are relaxed, your breathing is deep and slow but when you are afraid or agitated your breathing rate is elevated and shallow, akin to hyperventilation, which only increases your sense of anxiety. Control of the breath is a very valuable calming tool.

 

You know you are scared of flying and that looming business trip you've been dreading has finally arrived. Develop a calming routine. Prepare for your trip ahead of schedule and make sure to get to the Airport in plenty of time, so that you do not arrive already anxious and stressed. Eat something you enjoy beforehand, as this will keep your blood sugar levels stable and make you feel less stressed and tired.

Distraction is one of the better ways to keep yourself occupied if you are scared of flying. Take along a book you've been meaning to read or a computer game you've wanted to play or anything that might keep your mind pre-occupied.
